DIY Halloween Sign

in Halloween, holidays on 28/09/15

Have you guys heard of the Spooktacular September Series over on Eighteen25? I look forward to it each year and was so excited to be able to participate this year. You know how I love to create diy wood signs for each holiday and this DIY Halloween Sign was no exception! Follow along as I show you how to create your own. 🙂

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

  • Wood Slat Sign (you can find these at craft stores)
  • Vinyl Stencil
  • Dark walnut stain
  • paint sponge brushes
  • white acrylic paint
  • fine sanding block

Wood Slat Sign
To start you’ll stain your wood slat sign. You can create your own wood sign or you can purchase one at the craft store. I found this one at Hobby Lobby. My favorite stain is dark walnut by minwax.

Next up its time to make your stencil (if you’re like me and don’t have the talent for freehand!) I created this stencil using my Silhouette, adhesive vinyl, and the amelian font.  If you don’t have a Silhouette you can try a freezer paper stencil. When the stain was dry it was time to apply the vinyl stencil. After pressing down the vinyl to eliminate lifting or bubbling, gently dab your brush in paint and apply to the slat sign stencil. Use only a minimal amount of paint to prevent bleeding. You will probably want to go over the letters lightly twice or so. Also just dab the brush, no swiping!

When the paint is dry you can remove the vinyl stencil and lightly sand your sign.

And that’s it, a pretty, yet spooky Halloween sign that will be the perfect addition to your Halloween decor this year! Here are a few other ideas to inspire:
